Thanks for making me a mommy!

I used to dread Mother's Day.  Sometimes I still do.  Before I decided that I wanted to have children, this day never bothered me.  During my years of infertility and while we waited for a referral, I used to wish I could go to bed on Saturday night and when I woke up it would be Monday and Mother's Day would be over.

I always felt like I was a mommy to Maxx and Gohan.  I raised them from puppies.  I fed and took care of them when they were sick.  I loved them and they were my first babies.  In my heart, I was their mothers.  Yet, doggie mamas aren't considered real moms.  You weren't a mom unless you had a baby.

I'm now celebrating my third Mother's Day with Lexie.  She has shown me what being a mommy is all about.  It doesn't matter that I did not give birth to her.  Being there when she cries, laughing at the silliest things, listening to all that she has to say, dancing like there's no tomorrow, sucking out the snot from her nose, building and knocking down legos, singing crazy songs, reading the same book each night, sharing ice cream, helping her to poop, snuggling on the couch and just making beautiful memories......this is what makes me a mommy!

I still struggle with this day each year because I know there are women out there who are still waiting and for some, they may never get to celebrate a Mother's Day and my heart goes out to them.  I know I am extremely lucky because for many years, I believed I was never meant to be a mommy.  I also know there are two women in Taiwan who were the first moms to my Lexiebug and I owe them a debt of gratitude because without them, I would not be a mom today.
When I told Lexie that I loved being her mommy, she replied, "I love being your Lexie!"
